Baritone Saxophone
Born and raised locally, John began playing saxophone over 50 years ago and grew up in a household where the songs from the Great American Songbook were always playing from the stereo or played on the piano by his father. John has been a tenor player for most of his career, but his love of the baritone saxophone and the intimate sound of small group jazz recordings and performances is the inspiration to form the Schnack n’ Bari trio which is a collaboration with two excellent local musicians, Daniel Zimmerman on guitar and Kim Collins on standup acoustic bass and vocals. John’s longest running professional collaboration of over 35 years has been as an original member of Spencer the Gardener (which includes trumpeter Nate Berkey) who just released their latest studio album, “Shine On”.
Bass
Kim Collins is a versatile bassist, vocalist, composer, arranger, and educator whose career spans jazz, popular music, and vocal performance. A commanding presence on upright and electric bass, he has performed in big bands with legendary drummer Ed Shaughnessy, sung in vocal ensembles alongside Kenny Loggins, and contributed his driving bass work to a Boyz II Men recording. Kim performs with several acclaimed Santa Barbara ensembles, including the Schnack ’n Bari Quartet, The Idiomatiques, Boss Cats!, and The Collins Jazz Tonic. His deep groove, rich musicality, and engaging vocals bring warmth and vitality to every performance.
Guitar
Daniel Zimmerman is a highly regarded Southern California guitarist whose versatile playing has enriched live performances and recording sessions for more than two decades. He has performed and recorded with artists including Raw Silk, Spencer the Gardener, Roy Galloway, Jay Ferguson of Spirit, and internationally recognized Latin jazz artists Teka and Luis Muñoz. Equally accomplished as an educator, Daniel has taught guitar for more than 20 years and contributed articles to Guitar Player magazine and TrueFire. His sophisticated musicianship, expressive improvisation, and stylistic versatility make him a distinctive presence in any ensemble.
Drums
James Antunez is a veteran Santa Barbara–area drummer and percussionist known for his versatility, energetic groove, and decades of experience on the Central Coast music scene. His career has included performances with Bongo Town, Chuck Vincent’s Soul Revue, and numerous regional artists and ensembles. As a member of the Schnack ’n Bari Quartet, James provides the rhythmic foundation for the group’s tribute to the classic pianoless West Coast jazz sound of Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker. Equally comfortable with jazz, Latin, funk, soul, and popular music, he brings sensitivity, momentum, and seasoned musicianship to every performance.
